Where is Isaan?

Isaan (Thai: อีสาน) occupies the entire northeastern plateau of Thailand, forming the largest region of the country. It covers approximately 170,000 square kilometers - roughly one-third of Thailand's total land area.

Borders

• North & East: Mekong River, forming the border with Laos
• South: Dangrek Mountains, bordering Cambodia
• West: Phetchabun Mountains, separating it from Central Thailand

Landscape

The region sits on the Khorat Plateau, characterized by gently rolling hills, vast rice paddies, and the sandstone Phu Phan Mountains running through the center. The land is relatively flat compared to northern Thailand, with elevations ranging from 150 to 300 meters above sea level.

Two major rivers flow through Isaan: the Chi River and the Mun River, both tributaries of the Mekong. These waterways have shaped the region's agriculture and settlements for millennia.

Isaan has a rich history spanning thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows human habitation dating back to the Bronze Age, with the famous Ban Chiang archaeological site (UNESCO World Heritage) revealing sophisticated pottery and metalwork from over 5,000 years ago.

Khmer Influence

From the 9th to 13th centuries, much of Isaan was part of the Khmer Empire. This period left behind magnificent stone temples (prasat) that still dot the landscape. The most famous include Prasat Hin Phimai and Prasat Phanom Rung, which rival Angkor Wat in their architectural sophistication.

Lao Connection

Beginning in the 14th century, Lao people migrated into the region, bringing their language, customs, and Buddhist traditions. Today, the majority of Isaan people speak a dialect closely related to Lao, and the cultural connections remain strong.

Integration with Thailand

Isaan was formally integrated into the Kingdom of Siam (Thailand) in the late 19th century. While maintaining its distinct regional identity, Isaan has contributed enormously to Thai culture - particularly through its music (Mor Lam) and cuisine.
